Delores Leggett Walker – Lafayette County Writer

Delores Leggett Walker life is all about family, friends … fiction

She lives in the friendly community of Mayo, Florida near the Suwannee River and finds inspiration in the rhythm of the everyday lives of people she meets. Delores is a former newspaper reporter for Mayo Free Press and currently writes a bi-weekly column, Afterthoughts, in the Perry TaCoTimes and The Mayo Free Press. Bitten by the writing bug at a young age, she realized her life-long dream of becoming a published author for Amazon in 2013 with the debut of her first book in the Promise Trilogy. Delores loves small-town living, long walks at the beach, her extended family that includes twenty-three wonderful grandchildren and a sassy tabby cat named Lilah Jane.

Writers Ink Group

Delores also participates in a writers group that generally meets weekly on Wednesdays around 10:00 am at the local Lafayette County Florida Library right in downtown Mayo, Florida. They are called the Writers Ink Group and help each other with editing, writing ideas and getting published.

She will be participating in an online radio interview with Doug Dahlgren in Atlanta, Georgia on April 17, 2020 at 11:00 am. Please visit their website: https://www.artistfirst.com/dahlgren.htm

Her Interview Questions

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I am an avid researcher born from my curious nature. This is probably why I enjoyed my career as a newspaper reporter and continue to write a newspaper column. Each of my books has current events included in my character’s lives that mark the time period of the story. The length of the research varies according to the storyline. For instance; my upcoming book KerryLynn involves a character of Native American linage. I wanted to find a tribe that is not well-known who would fit the physical attributes of the character (hazel eyes, light complexion) that sports a full beard not usually seen in Native American men. I found this in the Lumbee tribe in North Carolina and gave an overview of the heritage of the tribe that fascinated me and hopefully will fascinate my readers.

How many hours a day do you write?
I am a morning person so I try to write for around three to four hours three days a week. I have deadlines for my column and the magazine stories so I work on those about two days a week. Writing is a full-time job even when your office is at your home.

How do you select the names of your characters?
Often the names come from folks I personally know. The character will remind me of that person so the name comes to mind making it easier to flesh out the character. There are times when I meet new folks that have a particularly catchy name. I keep a list of those to use when a character plays a minor part in the story. I use family names as well because they are all precious to me.

Does your family support your career as a writer?
Absolutely!! They cheer each milestone as does my community. My books are the product of my family, friends, and community. Family members grace the covers of the books and are apt to show up in the story along with folks who live in Mayo. When folks tell me a certain character reminds them of someone they know, I smile and say, “Chances are you really do know that person!”
